Is Event Insurance worth the paper it is written on?

When someone mentions Event Insurance, most people either glaze over or launch in to a tirade about exploitation, capital mockery or paranoia. The truth is, Event insurance has had a bad rap over the years, and this reputation means that many people would rather go without than pay money for something which is seemingly irrelevant for their big day.

Paying extra for needless services?

In an ideal world, your event would go smoothly from start to finish. The weather would stay perfect for you all day, and the day’s itinerary would make it easy for your event to run seamlessly throughout all the planned elements. However, life isn’t always ideal. It just takes one thing to go wrong, and your event could end up being far from how you planned it.

Here’s an example. You are about to get married, and everything down to the table planning has been considered. You have the best dress in the world, and your family have rallied around to make sure everything runs perfectly for you and your spouse. Everything which is in your power to control has been covered off.

And then your venue cancels at the last minute, due to bankruptcy. You’re stuffed. No other place can accommodate you at such short notice, and you are left with nowhere to hold your reception.
This is where event insurance comes in. While it can’t prevent the unforeseen from happening, it can cover you, your family and friends to make sure you can reschedule your big day, at no cost to you, and all is not lost. Without this, you could have lost thousands. With it, all you have is inconvenience, but it is possible to put things right.

Taking Event insurance out is a bit like playing the lottery. It’s only worth buying a ticket if you win, right? Similarly, it’s only worth buying Event insurance when something goes wrong. But if something does go wrong, you’ll have made a wise investment.

A wide range of services to protect you against the unknown. Here are some of the services which Event insurance provides, and what it covers for:
  • Public and employers’ liability - cover if you face a claim for compensation payable to a third party, following actual or alleged accidental bodily injury or damage to their property, if the incident happens during your event. This also includes injuries from food poisoning caused by food or drink served as hospitality by you.
  • Criminal defence - if a criminal action is brought against you for any breach of statute or regulation directly relating to any actual or potential claim covered under this section, insurance will pay the defence costs incurred, to defend such an action against you.
  • Cancellation – if your wedding or social event is cancelled for reasons beyond your control, reimburse your irrecoverable expenses, up to the limit you choose. This includes cancellation due to non-appearance of the bride, the groom, a member of the wedding party, the official photographer or the guest of honour, due to accident, death or serious illness.
  • Property damage – cover for loss of, or damage to, your property (or property you are responsible for) either at or travelling to and from your event. Loss of, or damage to, the venue's buildings, fixtures, fittings and machinery. Property damage to marquees.
  • Covering the unexpected – providing cover for incidents such as damage to your wedding or party dress, your photographer pulling out at the last minute, your video not being recorded correctly, transport not turning up, or your caterers pulling out or letting you down.
In addition to the standard covers above, you can also purchase a range of insurance cover to deal with:
  • Adverse weather cover for outdoor events in the open
  • Non-appearance of the bride’s or the groom’s grandparents over the age of 70
  • Non-appearance of the Disc Jockey or live entertainers.
In this way, Event insurance provides a safeguard against the unthinkable. It’s up to you how much you pay, who you source the insurance from and what you choose to get covered. Although most big days go off without a hitch, it’s good to know there are ways to gain peace of mind, should the worst happen.
